A – Players, Focusing on Your #1
Our Mission – Building an Amazing Company that impacts people and concrete.
What’s your #1 this week? To several friends of mine, they are accustomed to me asking this question – “What’s your #1 this week?” Whats the #1 thing that is the most important part of your week? I ask not only for my own curiosity but because when I ask someone else, I am also, in a way, asking of myself – “Nick, what’s your #1, have you clarified what you are working towards accomplishing this week. That if you can only work towards one thing – where are you putting your energy?”
The last two weeks my priorities have changed. My #1 became finding a new building and being operational as soon as possible. Other things were put on hold, and others helped me through my other commitments and responsibilities.
So what does this mean? Well, it means that I removed myself from most of my bids, put team chats on hold and spent 95% of my work time around the building. Regardless of what was planned or scheduled otherwise, if my priorities didn’t switch or I tried to continue these while pursuing new building stuff – I probably would have sucked at all of it, or found myself worn out with lackluster results. More work – but less efficient. Sounds like a lose-lose to me.
Don’t we all find ourselves sometimes stretched too far? We can’t say no to some things; maybe at the risk of hurting someone else’s feeling or our ego thinking we have ‘to do it all,’ and then we can find ourselves in that spot of being overwhelmed and frustrated. Or, maybe if we find our #1 to be ‘to just get through the week’ – we need to find something new to work towards and get excited about achieving.
What if every weekend you spent just a few minutes thinking about the intention of your week and what is something that can be accomplished by you? What could your #1 priority be, not only for your goal achievement and satisfaction, but in how you could serve your family, your team, and the world with your priority?
