Two weeks ago I started a new workout routine. I was finding myself thinking I was eating the right foods, doing the ‘right’ workouts, but I wasn’t getting stronger. I felt like I couldn’t get enough sleep, I was always hungry, and my body was sore. This is supposed to be what result are about right? No pain – No gain…Or so I thought.
After signing up for this new program, I spent a few hours digging through the back-end of the program. The part about what to eat, how to exercise – the pieces of the program beyond just showing up for the lifting or cardio. After a quick look through I realized I was actually over-training for the results I wanted. My body was compensating by needing a ton of sleep, and making me hungry. I ended up not gaining any muscle, leaning up, or getting stronger. My all-in attitude was putting in some work, but not getting better results. Talk about frustrating. What I needed was a simple, yet effective, process that balanced workout, rest, and food.
I think we are also the same place in our business. Our best work is going to be done, and the best business is run by a team each ‘owning their role, and doing their job (see video below)’ yet I stepped in when I should have directed, coached, and taught. Think about a football coach kicking his quarterback out of the game and going in there himself. He would fail. What makes him a good coach and seeing the game from the sidelines is different than what the quarterback sees on the field. They each serve a role, they understand each others role, they both want to win but they have different perspectives.
Just like in my workouts, I have been over-training in our business. Not staying the course for results, but jumping into other people’s work. Instead of jumping in to do, I need to share with you what I see, help you grow, and teach you what I know about running our business and what I have learned from my own experiences. I think you want a leader who is good at their job, who leads, who keeps projects coming in and making sure we all share a set of values and brand standards we work from. I can promise you that I will do the work to do my job.
I’ll show up and “Do My Job” to make sure I can help you be the best at yours.
